All About the Bronte Sisters

Blue River Press (December 15, 2020)

ALL ABOUT THE BRONTE SISTERS introduces middle grade readers (5th through 8th grade) to three remarkable women who wrote three of the most important novels of the 19th century. Charlotte Bronte wrote the classic JANE EYRE, Emily Bronte wrote the haunting WUTHERING HEIGHTS, and Anne wrote the compelling THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL.

The Brontë Sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne, grew up on the moors of England, running through the open landscape and filling it with people and stories from their imaginations. The three Victorian-era authors gave rise to a new wave of female authors by publishing their popular books first under male pseudonyms, then using their real names when they became successes. During lives marked by death, abandonment, and isolation, the three sisters kept each other company and formed a writing troupe that would create some of the most influential and memorable works of their time.

Within the book is a timeline of important world events during the Bronte sisters’ lifetime, a glossary, and original illustrations by Colleen Deignan. A teacher’s guide is available at the Blue River Press website.

ALL ABOUT THE BRONTE SISTERS is part of the Blue River Press ALL ABOUT series of biographies for middle-grade readers.

I traveled to Haworth, West Yorkshire, England while researching ALL ABOUT THE BRONTE SISTERS. I published a piece about that trip in a now-defunct online journal called Divine Caroline. When Divine Caroline morphed into More magazine, the link to that story was lost. You can read a scaled down version of it on my blog here.

“I’ve been a fan of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre for almost half a century, and a fan of the books by her sisters Emily and Anne for almost as long. But until reading All About the Bronte Sisters by Carolyn Burns Bass, I never knew so many fascinating details about their lives. This is a great intro to turn young readers into fans but also a great companion for young readers who are already fans. And the illustrations by Colleen Deignan really bring the story to life. Highly recommended.”
